St. Edmunds Newsletter – June 2021

What an incredible year it has been and it is hard to believe that there are just a little over 4 weeks to go in the school year!   Enough can’t be said for the amazing commitment that the children, staff, and families put into continuing our quality student programming while adapting to a year of changing health and safety restrictions.  In addition to academics, we were still able to have the students physically participate in cohort soccer, volleyball, basketball, senior floor hockey, as well as introducing track to students within their Physical Education classes.  We also had the opportunity to engage in the CISVA Spelling Bee and Readers are Leaders Competition via Zoom.

Furthermore, we were able to Zoom a variety of “field trip” experiences for our classes.   I am very proud of how well our school adjusted our programming and am ever grateful for your continual support of St. Edmunds!  We can look back with appreciation for all the learning and growth that has taken place and all the friendships that have been developed and enriched within our community.

To our Grade Seven students and all others who are leaving St. Edmund’s School, we wish you much happiness. We trust that the Christian attitude you have developed and the skills you have learned will contribute to your success and the success of others in the future.

We extend a special welcome to our new Kindergarten class and new families who will be joining our St. Edmund’s community for the 2021/2022 school year!

St. Edmund’s has been blessed with a team of great educators who have shown loving care and dedication to bring out the best in all our students.  As educators, we continue to challenge ourselves to grow and develop professionally. We are grateful to have had the opportunity to work with Mr. Mark Dotto for the past 12 years. Mr. Dotto will be stepping away from teaching to focus on other career paths.  He would like to thank everyone in the St. Ed’s community for all the wonderful memories, especially the students, past and present.  He plans to remain active at St. Ed’s as both a parent and coach.

Additionally, we appreciate the collaboration and inspiration from Mrs. Bernadette Wass who joined us this past year in our Grade 2 position.  Mrs. Wass will be pursuing a position at the International School HCMC) in Ho Chi Minh City.  She hopes to return to B.C. one day in the future.  They have both been dear members of our community and may God continue to walk with them as we wish them the very best on their personal and professional journeys.

We are very excited to have Mrs. Maria Salituro, long-time St. Ed’s parishioner and parent, who is bringing her 12 years of teaching experience to our grade 2 class.  We are also excited to have Mr. Adam Grossi in his new position as our Grade 7 teacher.  We hope to be officially announcing our grade 5 teacher at the end of the month.

Please keep all our staff (past, present & future) in your prayers.

Upcoming Events & Reminders:

Sacrament of First Holy Communion – Please continue to pray for our Grade 2 students who will be receiving the Blessed Sacrament for the first time this coming week over 6 masses.

We ask that you continue to pray for our youth as they continue to grow in faith and walk with Jesus, Our Living Hope.

Grade 7 Farewell Evening – We will be recognizing our grade 7s for all their many accomplishments on Tuesday June 22nd at 7 pm.  Stay tuned for further details as we await further announcements about public gathering restrictions for schools from the PHO and the Ministry of Ed.  We are so proud of our St. Edmund’s Class of 2021 and ask that you continue to keep them in your prayers as they move forward in their educational journey.

School & Class library books – Please return all library & class books by Friday, June 11th so that we are able to complete our inventory.  Any misplaced or lost books will need to be paid for by the students/parents.  Thank you for your co-operation.

School Uniform – We recognize that uniforms may be furthest from the mind, however, our provider, Cambridge Uniforms ask that your back-to-school order be placed by June 30th to ensure delivery during the month of August.

Please go to their website www.cambridgeuniforms.com, create an account if you don’t already have one, and use the school code TED357 to place your order or book a fitting.  Also of note is that girls will now have the option of ordering pants. A reminder that all uniform pieces are to be purchased from our supplier.

We also have gently used uniform pieces available by donation.  Please contact the school office.

Last Day of School – The last day of school for students is Tuesday, June 29th.  We will have a Livestream Mass at 9:00 am at which our Grade 7s will attend in person with remaining classes participating virtually.  Following classroom activities, report cards will be distributed and dismissal will be at 11:45 for Primaries and 12:00 for Intermediates.

School Safety & Gratitude – I would like to thank all the parents who have answered our call and have continued to provide safety at our crosswalks!  Your time and effort is much appreciated at morning drop-off and after-school pick-up.

“Walking with Hope” Walk-a-thon

Thank you for continuing to send in your donations and photos!  We’ve all enjoyed hearing about the various trails that you explored while completing your walk.  We hope that we will meet our goal by this Friday when we will announce the winners of “Teacher of the Day” as well as the primary and intermediate class winners of a pizza party.
