Extra Curricula
Programs

At St. Edmund’s the focus of our extra-curricular programs is to provide our students with opportunities to pursue their areas of interest. Our belief is that a well-rounded, inclusive extra-curricular program is what allows each child to reach his or her potential. The extra-curricular programs at St. Edmund’s Elementary include Choir, Student Council, Volleyball, Soccer, Basketball, Floor Hockey, Wrestling, Track & Field, Speech Arts, and Art Club.

St Edmunds
Choir

St. Edmund's offers an extra curricular intermediate choir for students in grades 3-7. Rehearsals are held in the morning prior to the start of the school day beginning in October. Our choir performs Christmas music during the month of December at various locations in North Vancouver, provides music at school celebrations, and participates in the Chancellor Music festival each spring. Over the past ten years, our intermediate choir has consistently been awarded gold medals at the Chancellor Music Festival. The choir offers an opportunity for children of all singing levels to participate, develop skills, and build a community of friends.

The primary choir (grades K-2) practices with the primary choir teacher as well as the music teacher, during the regular school day. The primary choir also sings at school events and often performs in the community at Christmas.

Student Council

St. Edmund's student council makes an important contribution to our school life. The executive and class representatives are elected by the students from among themselves. The council sponsors many activities throughout the year, including food bank drives, Penny Carnival at Halloween, a flea market of children's toys in the spring, and a year-round beverage container recycling program. As well, the students have adopted a foster child in El Salvador and contribute to various charitable organizations, including Covenant House, Birthright, the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace, St. Vincent de Paul Society and The Door is Open drop-in centre (links to the websites of these organizations are available in the ‘useful links’ section if you would wish to learn more). Each year the retiring council funds a visible improvement in our school community, such as the outdoor benches, personal rosaries, school banner and the large cross in the assembly hall. Student Council has become a proud and valuable tradition in our school.
Sports

Our sports program includes:

Girls Volleyball (Grades 5 – 7)
Boys and girls Soccer (Grades 4 – 7)
Boys and girls Basketball (Grades 5 – 7)
Boys and girls Track and Field (Grades 3 – 7)                                        Boys Floor Hockey
Boys & girls Wrestling

While skill development and effort are emphasized in our sports teams, it is our policy that any student who attends regular practices will be able to participate regardless of skill level. The only exception to this policy is the Track and Field meet at the end of the school year where students must meet CISVA standards in order to compete.

Track

We want to encourage all children to develop a love for fitness. Elimination from any extra curricular activity will only take place as a result of lack of co-operation or poor sportsmanship during games.

Visual Arts / Speech Arts

St. Edmund’s also offers an after school Art Club which meets Tuesdays after school. The work that the art club members produce, along with the work from the curricular art classes, is displayed annually at the St. Edmund’s Art Show at the end of May. The Speech Arts club begins in December for the primary students, with a performance at the Speech Arts Festival at the end of January. The season for the intermediate students continues into the Spring.
